Yes, it certainly is an interesting turn of events. From my research, it seemed much of the "bad blood" around the check mark came around the 2017-2020 periods, where people believed the powers that be at Twitter heavily favoured a specific political agenda and that agenda caused them to favour who was approved for the blue check and who was not.

Of course, since old mate Elon has taken over, he's just caused a whole bunch of different issues around it.
